FINANCIAL
READINESS SKILLS TO BE ASSESSED STATEWIDE
JACKSON,
MS—February 25, 2010—Next week, students
from throughout the state will face off in the
second annual online Mississippi Economics &
Financial Literacy Challenges provided by the
Mississippi Council on Economic Education.
Middle and high school students are eligible for
both the Economics Challenge and the Financial
Literacy Challenges, which are available on-line
March 1-5, 2010. Teachers can register as
many teams of four students as they wish at no
cost to the teams and prizes are available for
students and their teachers who achieve the
highest scores. All high schools are urged
to participate. First phase competition is
regional with winners advancing to the State
Finals on March 25, 2010.
APPLICATIONS
ACCEPTED NOW FOR THE SPRING MASTER TEACHER IN
ECONOMICS PROGRAM
JACKSON,
MS—January 7, 2010—Mississippi now has 251
teachers who have completed the Master Teacher
in Economics (MTE) program in 84 school
districts and an additional 84 teachers are in
progress. Applications are now being
accepted for the spring program, which begins on
February 6. The MTE improves
teachers’ abilities to bring economics to
their students in stand-alone economics courses
or to integrate economics as a strand within
social studies and business curriculums.

ways to demonstrate the financial and economic
literacy of their students through statewide
competitions. Registration is now open for
the Stock Market Game and the new Mississippi
Economics & Financial Literacy Challenges
and provided by the Mississippi Council on

Twenty
teams competed for state championship,
scholarships
JACKSON,
Miss., March 26, 2009 – Oak Grove High School and
Madison Central High School captured top honors
in the Mississippi Economics and Financial
Literacy Challenge March 25 at Millsaps College
in Jackson. They emerged from a field of 20 high
school teams to claim the state championship in
their respective divisions and will advance to
regional competition in Atlanta
in April.

—December 16, 2008—The country is in a
recession yet
Mississippi’s teachers are successfully teaching their
students about the free enterprise system.
Today, at 5 p.m. at the conclusion of the
Governor’s Economic Summit at the Jackson
Marriott, Governor Barbour is scheduled to
introduce the winner’s of the Fall 2008 Stock
Market Game competition. Twenty six
hundred students from throughout the state in
grades 4 through 12 have participated in the
on-line program where students invest $100,000
in hypothetical cash in the real market for ten
weeks. Of these students, nearly 80
percent have grown their portfolio above the
Standard and Poors 500.

MARKET GAME: MISSISSIPPI KIDS ARE
EXCELLING AND WORKSHOP REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR SPRING 2009
JACKSON,
MS—December 3, 2008—Mississippi kids are
demonstrating as much as a 94.70 percent
increase above the Standard & Poors 500
(SP). Nearly twenty six hundred students
throughout the state are currently engaged in
the Stock Market Game (SMG) and nearly twenty
one hundred students are surpassing the (SP).
In the process, kids are learning essential
workforce skills. Classroom teachers in
grades 4 through 12 working with the Mississippi
Council on Economic Education (MCEE) make the
program available to their students.
Training to teach workforce skills in economic
and financial literacy is now available for
teachers.

MARKET GAME WORKSHOP REGISTRATION
NOW OPEN FOR FALL 2008
JACKSON,
MS—August 15, 2008— Teacher training is
available for teachers to learn how to use the
Mississippi Stock Market Game (SMG) program in
the fall. The simulation is one of
the most effective learning tools available
about the free enterprise system for students in
grades four through 12. Data concerning
the success of Mississippi students who
participate in the program indicates an average
eight point increase in economic literacy.
The program is appropriate for students in Grade
4 through 12.

Foundation Provides Money for Teacher Training
August
6, 2008—PICAYUNE —The Lower Pearl River
Valley Foundation has provided $150,000 to train
master economics teachers in three
Pearl River
County
school districts.
The grant was presented recently to Dr. Pamela
Smith, president of the Mississippi Council on
Economic Education.
