ANNUAL FORUM ON AMERICAN ENTERPRISE
HONORING
U.S. SENATOR THAD COCHRAN HIGHLIGHTS
MISSISSIPPI’S SUCCESS
JACKSON,
MISS SEPTEMBER 8, 2010—Seven
hundred business, government and education
officials will salute the person who started
Mississippi on the road to achieving economic
and financial literacy, U.S. Senator Thad
Cochran. Good old-fashioned economics is
back in the classroom thanks to the Mississippi
Council on Economic Education (MCEE) and the
Forum is a salute of one of Mississippi’s true
champions of the free enterprise system, Senator
Cochran. The seventh annual U.S. Senator
Thad Cochran Forum on American Enterprise will
be held on Tuesday, November 2 at 12 noon at the
Jackson Marriott located at 200 East Amite in
Jackson.
American Express, Jean Chatzky and the Council
for Economic Education Launch 'The National
Money Night Talk' Program
NEW YORK, NY – August 12,
2010 – American Express, personal finance expert
Jean Chatzky and the Council for Economic
Education (CEE) today announced the launch of
“The National Money Night Talk.” This new
program, which culminates on September 16,
encourages families around the country to sit
down and talk about money and financial
responsibility.

Selena Swartzfager to become President of the
Mississippi Council for Economic Education
JACKSON, Miss., August 4,
2010—The Mississippi Council for Economic
Education (MCEE), the state’s only non-profit
organization to provide professional development
to Kindergarten through Grade 12 teachers in
economic, financial and entrepreneurial
education, announced today that Selena C.
Swartzfager will become the President, effective
August 16, 2010. Pamela P. Smith, Ph.D., who
has served as President, since July 1, 2004 will
retire in September.

READY STUDENTS HONORED
JACKSON,
Miss., May 5, 2010—Mississippi students are
demonstrating that they are learning skills that
will help them function in the real world.
Nearly 200 students from throughout the state
were recognized recently for their success in
achieving financial and economic literacy at
Millsaps College. The Mississippi Council
on Economic Education (MCEE) is focused on
achieving demonstrated financial literacy of all
students before they leave high school and the
students who are making the greatest strides
were awarded cash prizes, scholarships and
trips.

NOW: VITAL WORKSHOP ON SAVING AND
INVESTING
JACKSON,
MISS. May 20, 2010--Teach your students the
basics of saving and investing by registering
now for a summer workshop. Economics,
personal finance, business, math, computer
discovery and those in the High School Redesign
program that teach science, technology,
engineering and math to high school freshmen are
encouraged to participate. The Basics of
Saving and Investing : Investor Education 2020
is an investor education and protection teaching
guide developed for high school teachers,
however its content lends itself to all types of
investor education and protection initiatives
including college courses, work place education.

Metro Teams Wins First Round in Economics
Challenge
Students
advance to state championship in Jackson
JACKSON

Miss.
, March 17, 2010—Nine teams from Madison
Central and Northwest Rankin in Brandon won the
first round of competition in the Mississippi
Economics and Financial Literacy Challenge and
will advance to the state championship March 25
at Millsaps College in Jackson.
Sponsored by the Mississippi Council on
Economic Education and now in its seventh year
of competition, the Challenge included an online
preliminary round. The number of participating
teams increased from 101 teams last year to 118
teams this year. A total of 472 students took
the first round online economics and financial
literacy tests, which is up from 372 last year.
The highest scoring students and teams qualified
to compete for scholarships and awards at the
state level.
Madison Central Kicks Off Activities for
Global Debate Contest
This
week the Madison Central High School debate team
kicked off its spring activities for the Global
Debate contest. The project, which centers
around an exhibition debate to be held in April,
also includes a variety of environmentally
themed service projects. The first major
activity of the semester was the collection of
computers and peripherals for recycling.
Advertising in the community and on the web,
Madison collected over fifty computers and
computer devices to be refurbished and donated
to other educational institutions. The project,
completed in cooperation with Jackson State
University, is the second such drive conducted
by the school since the revamping of its
recycling program last spring. If you are

Program
Information: Madison Central began participating
in the Global Debate contest, a project of the
United Nations Foundation in 2007. The school's
debate team carries out an exhibition debate
each semester on a global issue. In 2008 and
2009, the team earned spots at the United
Nations Youth Leadership Summit at U.N.
Headquarters in New York. This summer, the team
hopes to attend the International Youth Forum in
Zeelands, Netherlands. More information on the

FINANCIAL
READINESS SKILLS TO BE ASSESSED STATEWIDE
JACKSON,
MS—February 25, 2010—Next week, students
from throughout the state will face off in the
second annual online Mississippi Economics &
Financial Literacy Challenges provided by the
Mississippi Council on Economic Education.
Middle and high school students are eligible for
both the Economics Challenge and the Financial
Literacy Challenges, which are available on-line
March 1-5, 2010. Teachers can register as
many teams of four students as they wish at no
cost to the teams and prizes are available for
students and their teachers who achieve the
highest scores. All high schools are urged
to participate. First phase competition is
regional with winners advancing to the State
Finals on March 25, 2010.
APPLICATIONS
ACCEPTED NOW FOR THE SPRING MASTER TEACHER IN
ECONOMICS PROGRAM
JACKSON,
MS—January 7, 2010—Mississippi now has 251
teachers who have completed the Master Teacher
in Economics (MTE) program in 84 school
districts and an additional 84 teachers are in
progress. Applications are now being
accepted for the spring program, which begins on
February 6. The MTE improves
teachers’ abilities to bring economics to
their students in stand-alone economics courses
or to integrate economics as a strand within
social studies and business curriculums.
