Jackson, MS – October 3, 2024

            – In a significant move to enhance financial literacy and economic understanding among the youth, Governor Tate Reeves has officially declared October as Economic Education Month in Mississippi. This proclamation underscores the vital role that economic education plays in preparing K-12 students for future financial responsibility and informed citizenship.

In Mississippi, economics is a required course for high school graduation, reflecting the state’s commitment to equipping students with essential skills to navigate an increasingly complex financial landscape. By emphasizing economic education, we are not only fostering critical thinking but also preparing our young people to make sound financial decisions that will benefit their families and communities.

“Understanding economics is crucial for the personal and professional success of our students,” said Governor Reeves. “As we celebrate Economic Education Month, let us reaffirm our dedication to providing our young people with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in today’s economy.”

The Mississippi Council on Economic Education (MCEE) plays a pivotal role in this effort, offering resources, training, and support to educators across the state. Their initiatives aim to make economic concepts accessible and engaging, ensuring that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to learn about personal finance, entrepreneurship, and the principles of economics.

“At the Mississippi Council on Economic Education, we believe that learning economics should be both accessible for teachers and engaging for students. Our mission is to provide K-12 grade educators with the tools they need to teach these important concepts, while also creating fun, interactive experiences that spark students’ curiosity and interest in the economy.” — Selena Swartzfager, President, MS Council on Economic Education. “Economics at its most basic is decision making. All of us live economics every day and if we are educated on good decision making skills, with an understanding that wants are unlimited but resources are limited, we will be better citizens,” states Swartzfager.

Jackson, MS – August 26, 2024 – Weaving a high-energy, live rock performance with lessons in finance, the band Gooding returns to Mississippi October 28, 2024 to share with students how financial literacy and confidence can help them make their dreams come true.

The Mississippi Council on Economic Education (MCEE) — a nonprofit in Mississippi that aims to advance K-12 education in economic and personal finance literacy across the state — along with Cadence Bank and Tougaloo College are making this event possible.

Selena Swartzfager, president of the MCEE, says the band’s music and message is positive for young people. “I was initially doubtful that a rock n’ roll concert would be a good setting for a lesson on personal finance. Then, I saw Gooding in action when they performed for Jackson Public School students at the Jackson Convention Complex last year. Once the music was over the teaching began, you could have heard a pin drop in that room. The students were so attentive and the message from a cool rock star hits different than the one from a teacher or banker. This concert isn’t the whole personal finance education message but an incredibly exciting part of the pie,” said Selena Swartzfager.

After the concert, lead singer and guitarist Steven Gooding talks to students about the importance of saving, how compound interest works, why to stay away from payday lenders and how making wise financial decisions can help a person fulfill one’s dreams.

“Some people think rock and roll and financial literacy don’t have much to do with each other, but they actually do,” Gooding said. “It wasn’t until I saw what we do as a business that it began allowing us the freedom to do what we wanted. We’re on our own music label now, so we play what we want to play and tour how we want to tour. We wouldn’t be able to do it if we weren’t investing in ourselves.”

Gooding’s music has been featured in “CSI,” “Criminal Minds,” “The Daily Show,” “Iron Man 2,” “Walk the Line” and “Suicide Squad.” Inspired by their work with Quincy Jones as part of Operation HOPE, they helped create Funding the Future, a nonprofit organization that teaches children the importance of financial literacy.
